| Welcome to Camp 17! This is the first main camp you arrive at after hiking up from Juneau. Camp 17 is approximately 4,200 ft ASL (1,292 meters). So.... your wondering what kind of adventure Donner and Jacker had in this inhospitable place? Well... let me tell ya! Buster (another Icefield person) and I were cruising across the glacier on our skies to dig a snow pit (a snow pit is used to determine last winters snow accumulation). The day was typically foggy and we could see about 10 feet (3 meters) in front of ourselves. Suddenly we came upon a set of small bear tracks, very fresh. Hmmmmmm? Oh! Looky here! Mama's tracks too! Uh oh... we quickly contact Donner (in the nice safe building back at camp) on the hand-held radio...."There's fresh bear tracks on the glacier! And everywhere we go the bear tracks seem to be there too!" Donner replies, with his usual aplomb, "Ahhhhh....don't worry...if you can't see her she can't see you!" Thanks for the support Donner! |
