Building The Ravens Nest

Juneau Icefield, Alaska

Back to Mccullyweb.com Home Page

A long time ago in 1986, I was asked to build a bunk house for senior staff on the Juneau Icefield, Alaska. At that time I had an outfit called Rawbone Construction. I built or remodeled a lot of buildings on the Icefield in the 15 summers of construction. In order to build there all of the materials must come in via helicopter, and the lumber order must be essentially perfect. It is not likely to go to town 60 miles away across numerous glaciers because you forgot a sheet of plywood or two. It was a great time.

This project shows the materials lying near the site, then probing for the sub-snow surface to determine the bedrock profile. I did not want to shovel any more snow than was necessary. The clerestory design works well, almost too well, on those occasional sunny days. In the header graphic is Mike Stroebel, Bob Hammond, Alan Ward and Linda Blackwood.
